Why Did I Create This Site?A student in a Health Information Management (HIM) program spends a minimum of two years in the classroom, learning skills necessary for managing protected health information. The culmination of these studies is a capstone course which prepares a student for the national Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam and a job in healthcare.
Part of the capstone is the Professional Practice Experience (PPE) which places a student in a clinical setting to use skills learned in the classroom in a hands-on setting. There is a scarcity of these PPE sites for a variety of reasons. This site is designed to provide a virtual/simulation PPE as well as review materials for a successful attempt in the RHIT exam. Completion of all activities in this site is equivalent to this five-unit class. Health Information is a rapidly evolving field with the advent of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and complex external regulations. Navigating this field, like sailing on the bay, requires a multifactorial awareness of internal and external forces to guide the HIM professional. It is my hope that this site can serve as a compass for the emerging professional. If you are new to the study and want to see what is is instore for you, select "LEARN MORE ABOUT HIM" and check out the AHIMA Career Wheel to see what adventures you can experience and how to plan for your advancement. |
